Every time i have saw a piece of interesting design that i think my style relates to i photographed it, mainly with my phone as it is the only camera i have with me all the time, so the photos aren't great quality. Doing this has helped me to recognise the categories my style of work can fall under and what promotion i will be able to design when in the industry.

As an idea to begin with i wanted to create the headlines for a shops instore magazine using my handrendered type i have had a look at various magazines that i could use to recreate the headings.

This would only be a small task and wouldn't neccesarily stand alone as a brief, it also would be extremely similar to the way i want to create my design context book so i am going to move away from this idea.

I have decided i am going to focus my final 5 weeks on promotion for brands and the expantion of my existing briefs.

I am going to create posters to explore various sizes and stocks.

Because it was suggested that my book needs to be fun and enjoyable to read to reflect the subject matter at its best, i have had a look at interesting ways in which i can do this and ways in which type can be created...

I want my book to appear more as a magazine than a formal uninteresting book.

I could cut out type and use this method of standing it up in the book as it is an intriguing way of catching attention.

creating text out of other everyday objects throughout the book as heading pages could be an interesting way of varying each page.

Another way of cutting out type to sit above the page of the book.

I went to this exhibition at the design museum as it has a mixture of everything, so i thought it would be great for varying inspiration and had graphics involved aswell. There are only a few photos from this, as its the only ones i could sneak.

After interviewing certain people for my design context work, i have had a look at some of the designers/illustrators that inspire them...

Shrigley: I really like shrigleys way of working as it is so simple but yet effective. His way of simply using his own handwriting is his own trademark and his own font, which i really love as it is part of his identity.

Sister corita kent: Her work is an influence on the hand rendered type now that has been developed and and moved on from this style but i still really love the way she works with type.

Marisical: I don't particularly really like this work as it is all using the same typeface, but the style and colour ways reminded me of the approach i tried with my converse posters last module.

To clarify branding and identity I interviewed specific brand related designers Chris Hilton from Design Friendship and Christopher Hunt of Action impact focusing on three main questions. I got their opinions on what a brand is? Whether or not we could live without brands? And is it important for a brand to keep on getting major redesigns to be successful. The overall opinion I got was that brands are just the face of the business and it is a designers tool to attract customers. I particularly chose these designers as they work within the branding specialism they interests me most.

Type as image has always interested me as it is a more clarified way of communicating a message with words. As the words express more of a personality. The type used on Rudd studios promotional work for Barneys New York Co-op Identity & Collateral is what inspired me to have a go at creating the type on my valentines day cards. I made the font myself in font lab and wanted to grasp the technical computer aspect with pixels but also keep it soft and feminine. These are going to be finished on the laser cutter.

Graphic Thought facility is a london based company who work with brand identity. I particularly like the work they have produced for a clothing label, Jo Gordon, they have used hand rendered type for the whole of the website and logo which makes the company appear craft orientated and original, this is what I like about this way of working as it is a natural aesthetic to achieve unlike computer fonts.

The brochure interested me as the use of cut out holes for the text was a different approach to adding text to a brochure this gave me the idea to experiment further with my valentines cards on the laser cutter other than just leaving them solid.

To further my research I plan on visiting the design museum to view some of this years most iconic work at the Brit Insurance Designs of 2010. This will give me an insight into how identity and promotion can make such an impact on the graphic design industry. The Brit Insurance Design Awards, showcase the most innovative and forward thinking designs from around the world. This is Last year's winner, the unofficial Barack Obama poster campaign by Shepard Fairey.

Farrow is a design branding direction company based in London. There logo designs they have produced use just typography but in a visually engaging way that they can stand alone without image… this is what I want to achieve within my logo designs. Here I have already designed an icon for the cardiff half marathon which focuses on type but also I have a brief incorporating a dragon into the letter shape.

The other logo that is in progress at the minute is for a folk and country recording studios. This logo will stick to with hand rendered type to incorporate folk and celtic design. I will apply it to various stationary and experiment with foiling and embossing on different stocks.

I plan on interviewing Linzie Hunter to find out why she works with handrendered type this way, how she got into this style and her view on how it has just suddenly become popular… The way she works a certain style and character to her text, for different subject matters is what I need to experiment on and I shall do this by exploring as many ways possible to use it in promotion and identity.

Film titles are a great source of type as image and it is something id like to get into in the future. If I have the opportunity to gain skills in animating text it will give type as image even more levels to work with. This work is by Geoff Mcfetridge who works with Champion Studio, and designed these titles for ‘where the wild things are’ I plan on interviewing him for his point of view on type as image.

I hope to arrange with the designers of Rudd Studio and Design Friendship which are both based in London, a time that I can visit there studios for either work experience or just a chance to gain a better understanding of how they work with brand promotion and design. Rudd studio bring brands to life in motion print and sound. Design Friendship provides solutions across a whole spectrum of media from print, digital, moving image and 3D design. I feel I need to push myself out of my comfort zone and explore type as image in as many medias that I can.

Made by six is a Lestershire based creative consultancy which provides design and art direction for brand, print and screen. I am already in touch with this company and if all goes well I should have a placement over easter. Which will give me the opportunity to gain more experience with working with brands across print and screen.
The contents of my design context research will be organised within these headings….studio visits, interviews, type as image, exhibition work and how my practice relates to the industry work.

I discussed a problem with the client they may arise with their recording studio name... as Factory records usually abbreviates their name to FAC for instance heres some examples...

They insisted that it will be ok as they are F.A.C records and will never just be known as FAC.

What type are you

As i am interested in type as image and how the words convey and show the actual emotion and physical appearance to what the word means, i found this site really interesting and quite true to my own personality.

It asks you a series of questions based on your personality and then states a font that best reflects your personality. Myn was Archer hairline. Which is a modern serif font with slight cusps implying that i can have a slight extrovert side to me, but not a bold statement font as i am not extrovert.

Chris Hilton 1: What is a brand?

There is loads of very clever BS out there that can try to explain what a brand is. At Design Friendship we try and keep things a little simpler.

A brand is the consumer face of any business. It's the personality that we as consumers buy into, form a relationship or fall in love with.

A brand can create consumer loyalty to any business or product but it can also have the opposite effect too.

Think of your favorite brands and ask yourself why you like them so much? Obviously the first thing is they all provide a service or product you love, but beyond that what else attracts you to them?

Is it how they talk to you?
Do you feel they understand you etc?

Chris Hilton 2: Can we live without brands?

Of course we can, but you have to realise there have always been brands of a sort. A 1000 years ago they where call religions, tribes, countries or family.

Since then the world has developed, moved on and become a very different place. Consumerism is now the new religion and there is far more choice then ever before. This is a direct result of an ever-increasing period of intensive marketing over the past 100 years or so.

High St Fashion, Contemporary Design, PR, Marketing, Celebrity, Lifestyle are all a by-products of this and have increased year on year too unprecedented levels of visual noise. Brands have had to keep pace, to keep you interested and as a result it's hard to see a brand free future in the next 100 years or so.

There will at some point be a back lash to brands at some point but like the current financial mess we all find ourselves in this will only eliminate the weaker, less relevant brands at the time.

Plus we all need something to spend are money on!

Chris Hilton 3: Do you think it is important for a brand to keep on getting major redesigns for their identity to achieve stable success?

In a word NO, major rebrands ever 5 mins has the opposite effect. But just as you go to the hairdressers or the gym it's important brands look after themselves, make sure they look as good as they can and refreshed.

No body likes someone who's let them selves go now do they!

Christopher Hunt 1. What is a brand?

A brand is a promise to its customers & staff. It goes way beyond 'the logo' and it's visual merits. In order for a brand to succeed it needs to create brand awareness and brand loyalty. A brand defines the company, it's ethos, it's intentions and it's roots. As well as building customer loyalty a brand should inspire the employees of the business and also instill confidence.

A hard question to answer really as we have never lived in a world without brands.

Christopher Hunt 3. Do you think it is important for a brand to keep on getting major redesigns for their identity to achieve stable success?

I think it is important for a brand to keeps its finger on the pulse as it were... I think a brand should be refreshed from time to time but as long as it is still in keeping with the core brand values, for instance if you suddenly change a brand with no apparent reason, this will probably lead to confusion! People don't generally adapt well to change. For example, Pizza Hut changing it's name to Pasta Hut, it lasted one TV add and one poster campaign before it was ditched as an idea, everyone saw straight through their blatant attempt to make Pizza Hut sound healthier. The 2012 Olympics brand, BBC asked 10,000 people if they liked it, the response they got was 10,000 NO! Nothing was explained by Wolff Olins in the public eye to explain their work, the first people saw of it was on the news next to how much the tax payer had paid for it. If there had been an explanation and a gradual implementation of the identity and the brand I feel it would have gone down a lot better.

So in short, yes I do think brands need to be refreshed, but it needs to be done with careful consideration and there needs to be a reason to do it.

Folklore culture, including stories, music, dance, legends, oral history, proverbs, jokes, popular beliefs, customs, and so forth within a particular population comprising the traditions (including oral traditions) of that culture, subculture, or group. It is also the set of practices through which those expressive genres are shared. The academic and usually ethnographic study of folklore is sometimes called folkloristics. The word 'folklore' was first used by the English antiquarian William Thoms in a letter published by the London Journal Athenaeum in 1846.[1] In usage, there is a continuum between folklore and mythology. Stith Thompson made a major attempt to index the motifs of both folklore and mythology, providing an outline into which new motifs can be placed, and scholars can keep track of all older motifs.

Folk culture refers to the lifestyle of a culture. Historically, handed down through oral tradition, it demonstrates the "old ways" over novelty and relates to a sense of community. Folk culture is quite often imbued with a sense of place. If elements of a folk culture are copied by, or moved to, a foreign locale, they will still carry strong connotations of their original place of creation.
Examples of American folk cultures include:
Powwows
Native tribal regalia
The cakewalk
Louisiana Creole cuisine, music, and language
Handmade quilts
The Hawaiian hula, leis, a pantheon of nature gods, and the concept of aloha
Shaker architecture and furniture
Whale-hunting with traditional spiritual rites of some Alaskan tribes
Tepees
Hand-gathered Wild rice gleaned in the traditional manner in the United States' northwoods
The above-mentioned have entered mainstream consciousness to varying degrees, but none have been so distorted from their original form as to have lost their culturally specific sense of place. In contrast, blue jeans and McDonald's are cultural icons which have been made so internationalized they have lost their original sense of place, and they are no longer part of folk culture. Similarly, Federalist architecture was created in the United States, but in a style influenced by, and meant to appeal to, outside interests.

The similar aspects of design that i can see throughout these album covers is the use of hand rendered type and a celtic design kind of a approach similar to some tattoo designs i am going to look into these areas for more inspiration.
